Reimagining Our Expertise

Project Overview

As part of the digital design team, I was tasked with redesigning the expertise section of the Henderson Engineers website. The firm was transitioning away from a practice based approach and towards a sector based strategy. Each sector would encompass these practices, but would be marketed to current and potential clients as an entire vertical market. Prior to this launch, the expertise section was outdated with limited accessibility, usability, and a poor aesthetic appearance. As a result, I created a new visual style and flow for this section, wireframes, and a working prototype.

The Challenge

Redesign the expertise section that clearly defines the firm’s strategy and goals. Ensure that this redesign will significantly improve the usability, aesthetic, and interactive qualities for both our engineers and external clients (current and potential).

The Solution

When I was tasked with redesigning the expertise section, I had already been employed at Henderson Engineers for over a year. I was familiar with the firm, its external presence, our users, and most importantly, our brand. I decided that an entire redesign of the expertise section was necessary in order to tell our story that is engaging, interactive, accessible, and aesthetically pleasing.

Research & Initial Designs

I began by first sketching out some basic wireframes for the expertise section which included new navigation, an expertise page, and sector and practices pages. From researching the competitors and gaining inspiration from my mood boards, I was able to sketch out some designs that displayed a fresh aesthetic, improved usability, and remained consistent with our brand.

User Testing

With some screens designed, I decided to conduct user testing. I gathered marketing leadership, select engineers, and client relationship directors and walked them through my designs. Doing so helped me implement a UI and keeping the user in mind. After the participants navigated through my UI designs, I simply asked for their feedback.

Prototype Development

Once all the user testing and improvements were made, I started prototyping. I designed and prototyped the navigation, the expertise page, and the sector and practice templates in Adobe XD. One of my goals was to organize the sector pages with all relevant leaders, projects, news, and thought leadership articles. Users would be able to remain on this page and find all relevant information in regards to their sector. They could find more information on any of those categories as their user flow easily directs them to do so.

Live Site & Reflection

This project took almost a year from start to finish. We took our time in making sure we understood the firm’s restructure, strategy, and goals. We met with executive leadership to ensure our external vision met that strategy and tested our designs with engineers, client relationship directors, and marketing managers.
